In an ayurvedic consultation you will be asked a series of questions that range from the time and place of your birth, health issues you wish to be free from, sleep patterns, health professionals you work with, your current diet, recreational activities and hobbies, and any yoga and spiritual practice you may have. Your answers will help me to see a lot about how the elements (space, air, fire, water, earth) and qualities (sattva, rajas, and tamas) of nature are working through you.
Next, I will help you to explore who you are by nature. When you were conceived, your parent’s state of minds and bodies came together and formed your prakriti or natural born mind-body constitution or dosha. Are you a fiery, passionate leader? A creative person who loves to be active? A loving person who loves to chill? Some combination? This exercise will inform you as to who you are striving to be on your path to health.
After that, we will look at how your natural born dosha has become imbalanced over time and as a result of the ayurvedic principle “like attracts like.” This imbalanced dosha is called your vkriti and is more easily understood when you look at it through the lens of nature's pairs of ten opposites or the gunas. Some examples of these are hot - cold, soft - hard, sharp - smooth, etc.
We will also take an inventory on how well your digestive fire or agni is working. A strong digestive power to digest your emotions, your food, and your trauma is critical in the healing process. When one’s agni is burning bright, we have clarity and enjoy a great capacity for transformation. When we have a low agni, ama or toxins will begin to form dis-ease.
Lastly, we will look at how the subtle essences of ojas, tejas, and prana are showing up in your life. These energies build upon one another. When we are running low on ojas or life fuel, we don’t have the motivation (tejas) to approach life with enthusiasm. Without enthusiasm, we are not able to shine our light (prana) outward.
From here I will create a customized treatment plan for you. The lifestyle plan will help you to:
Honor who you are by nature (prakriti).
Give you the tools you need to reduce your doshic imbalances (vkriti).
Regulate your digestive fire (agni).
Reduce or expel toxins (ama).
Build ojas, tejas, and prana
When you are addressing all of these things by following an individualized lifestyle plan that includes diet, routines, and observances you will find relief from what is ailing you. As a result of this process, I guarantee:
You will enjoy more peace and clarity.
You will feel more motivated and inspired.
You will feel more grounded and content.
